This is truly a hidden gem. It’s as if you are getting your own little slice of a state park somewhere. My son and his friends thought it was an excellent break location away from college. Warren is good natured and down to earth. You will thoroughly enjoy the serenity of this location.

The Cabin, in town Fredericksburg

PatrickRating, 5 starstoday
Janet's place is a wonderful little one room cabin within walking distance of Fredericksburg's tourist hot-spot main street. It was carefully decorated for romantic ambience and yet felt like home. We enjoyed watching the wildlife that was right in our back yard. Janet provided us with tons of amenities to go with the bathroom and kitchen and TV and fireplace. The neighborhood was super safe. We had a memorable wedding anniversary at Janet's cabin. I highly recommend Janet and her cabin. I look forward to visiting Janet's cabin again.

Cabin in the country on private fishing ponds.

JenniferRating, 5 stars2 weeks ago
My husband and I stayed for our honeymoon and we absolutely LOVED it! Our dogs had the best time also. The views were great, so much available from fishing rods, bait, grills and kitchen utensils. Also, the DVD collection was impressive! We loved the property so much, we will definitely be coming back and would highly recommend for anyone trying to get away and relax. However, Walmart is only 20 min away so you still can get essentials easily. The Kurig stopped working randomly and Adam offered to go get another, which we declined because we aren’t huge coffee drinks but him offering was super nice! We also were considering changing our check-in/check-out dates, and he also was super flexible to any changes. Can’t wait to come back!!!

The Cottage at Benedict Farms

JessicaRating, 5 stars1 week ago
Our family had a wonderful stay at Andrea and Scott's farm. We spent the whole time playing in the yard, enjoying the animals, and feeling at home inside. I personally found sitting in the screened-in front porch to be really relaxing. We truly appreciated how Andrea and Scott educated our family about life on the farm. They graciously allowed us to join in on feeding the animals during an otherwise busy weekend for them, which we appreciated because that was a big part of our reason for choosing their farm. It was precious for the children to collect eggs after meeting the hens. Inside, we thanked our new hen friends for the eggs we ate. Our family has lots of new, fun memories from our weekend at Andrea and Scott's place.

Cottage on Commerce

This was a perfect place for me to stay while I was in town working. It was close to my worksite, clean, safe and relatively quiet. The first night I was there the neighbor had a visitor that had a dog that barked most of the night. When I contacted Randy and Shea they immediately began trying to take care of it. I believe they did every thing they could to fix the situation. The issue was resolved by the next morning and all was well. I would certainly stay here again should the occasion arise.

I enjoyed Tonya's place. It's not too far off the main road, down a gravel road with a horse pasture on the other side. Quiet and peaceful. There's a cute cafe within walking distance. The place itself has everything you want and need: Good heating and cooling; a couple of different types of coffee makers, nice TV and Wifi, thick towels, comfortable bed and good bedding. The bathroom has a nice feel with a clawfoot tub and decorative sink. Very responsive host. Definitely would stay here again.

First things first ... such a wonderful host!! I had a few minor situations happen but she was quick to respond and resolve the issue. You need your grass cut, you let her know and her and her Fiance come and take care of it for you!! Secondly... She allowed us to add something to her home! A fire pit! It was an ask and she was approved out ask. We bought and hope future guests enjoy it!! Also bought a few camo chairs also, for future guests to use as well!! This place is so relaxing, and close to lots of local eatery. Also not far from Lockhart which is where my husband and a few of his coworkers were commuting too. I would highly recommend too anyone who is visiting for a relaxing getaway, business. Beds are small but comfortable. Comfy bedding. Cozy couch, you'll slink right into them and cute and comfortable Egg Chairs. If you've come across this review it's because your considering the AirBnB ... Don't skip last it. It's truly a Gem 💎!! You won't regret it!! Thx Bera!!

Your guide to Texas

Welcome to Texas

This vast state — the biggest in the contiguous United States — sweeps from semi-tropical white-sand beaches to forests, rolling prairies, windswept plains, and desert sand dunes. It even has the country’s second-largest gorge: the Panhandle’s Palo Duro Canyon. Texas has 16 areas preserved by the National Park Service, ranging from Padre Island — one of the world’s only hypersaline lagoons — to the Palo Alto Battlefield, where U.S. and Mexican troops fought in 1846. Standouts include the colorful, fossil-rich Guadalupe Mountains and the cactus-studded solitude of Big Bend. The five San Antonio Missions, including the Alamo, do double duty as a World Heritage Site too.

This big-hearted state offers something for everyone, from cattle drives to cutting-edge music and gleaming modern architecture. Food highlights include BBQ, Tex-Mex, and festival wackiness like fried PB&J sandwiches. The connecting tissue? Admiration for the countryside and its folksy, slowed-down ways harking back to Texas’ farming and ranching heritage. Wherever you go, find time to sit for a spell and soak it all in.

The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Texas

The climate varies wildly across the state’s 268,596 square miles. But broadly speaking, spring and fall remain the best times for pleasant weather. Fall has the advantage of avoiding the peak festival crowds who flock to the state’s southern half, especially South Padre Island. March comes in like a lion with Austin’s SXSW, which celebrates the convergence of the film, music, and tech industries. April typically draws 3.5 million people to Fiesta San Antonio, an 11-day heritage bash that includes the Battle of Flowers parade. Texas doubles down on Juneteenth across the state. Autumn brings the State Fair to a Dallas park that’s a National Historic Landmark, as well as the Texas Renaissance Festival to Houston. Then the Austin City Limits music festival draws big-name acts for two weeks in October.

Top things to do in Texas

Hamilton Pool Preserve

A natural spring pockets the Hill Country chaparral, creating an emerald grotto fringed by maidenhair ferns, 30 miles west of Austin. But it’s more than just a pretty swimming hole with waterfalls (depending on the season). The preserve protects the fragile canyon and animals like the endangered golden-cheeked warbler that rely on it.

Mineral Wells Fossil Park

An ancient sea deposited fossils of corals, urchins, sea lilies, and even primitive sharks here 300 million years ago — an area now 87 miles west of Dallas. This buried treasure emerged due to erosion in the city’s old landfill, closed in the early 1990s. Today paleontologists, amateur and professional, can dig here using small gardening tools and take home their finds for personal use. Note: the site has basic restrooms and no running water. Bring plenty of liquids and also an umbrella for shade.

Terlingua Ghost Town

This abandoned Victorian mining village sits between Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park, 13 miles north of the U.S.-Mexican border. Once a leading producer of quicksilver, Terlingua faded after World War II. Today visitors can explore the ruins and a simple cemetery, known for its Day of the Dead celebrations. The town has a few tourist amenities, and attracts crowds for its chili cook-offs in early November and late February.
