Magical Jungle Cabin with Pool

BrianRating, 5 stars2 weeks ago
We really enjoyed our stay at this little cabin in the jungle. This is in a less-visited part of the island, but very convenient to access Volcano, Hilo, and the lower Puna area. The cute and comfortable cabin is in a very private location with foot access to the kitchen and pool areas nearby. I give this place my highest recommendation and look forward to visiting again.

Oceanfront! Outstanding! 2BR/2BA w Pool & Hot Tub

KellyRating, 5 stars2 weeks ago
One of the best places I have stayed. My Boyfriend said the same. It was absolutely beautiful and comfortable with lovely ocean views and hearing the waves from the bedrooms and entire unit. Brad and Susan were so friendly and welcoming. Brad helped me so much with determining what to do in our short stay with great insights and took lots of time to offer suggestions and knowledge of the Island. There was all we needed for coffee and snacks to tide us over. Everything was so thoughtful and it was obvious the amount of care he put into the property. It is 25-30 minutes to Hilo, but the drive was really not too bad and honestly quite worth it. There were so many things we didn't have time to do, so I plan on returning. Thank you Brad & Susan!

If you are looking for a place to retreat, reflect and ground yourself. This is it. This place is very clean, and the host is very thoughtful and credible. This host is a great communicator and genuinely wants to make sure you are taken care of and is flexible/accommodating when and if needed. I would definitely book here again.

Absolute Paradise, Near Kehena Beach, Ocean View

SarahRating, 5 stars1 month ago
A wonderful place away from the busy city! Our family enjoyed this home and all it had to offer, the pool, soaking tub, beautiful plants, frog hunting :) and even the games left for the guests. We traveled into Hilo most of the days here but our host gave us wonderful local recommendations for nearby attractions and restaurants. It was a beautiful home tucked away in a beautiful botanical garden!

Zen Treehouse Private Retreat & Farm Stay

MatthewRating, 5 stars1 week ago
This is such a unique and wonderful Airbnb experience, and we were so happy and fortunate to be hosted by Ana and Sharkey for our vacation in Hilo. Airbnb is a peaceful sanctuary in the rainforest, and absolutely enables you to connect with nature! The breeze from the east kept the whole treehouse cool and comfortable during our stay in April. Hosts were very communicative, very friendly, provided many wonderful recommendations on activities in the Hilo area and kept the Airbnb well stocked, clean and private for us. We were fortunate to join Sharkey on a tour of the farm, and was given fantastic insight into the production of coffee and chocolate and vanilla on the island and we learned so much! The Airbnb is pretty easy to find and well located for trips to Hilo, to the Volcano National Park, and to many of the beaches in the area! Looking forward to staying again soon! Thank you again!

RichardRating, 5 stars4 days ago
Hilo is a great place to visit, volcano park, beaches, Hilo and Ola Breweries. Jims place was a retreat, an escape to real hawaiian living. We fed the koi, relaxed while surrounded by orchids and palms. We had a great stay and would book again.

Pāhoa Kai Hale’uku

CatherineRating, 5 stars5 days ago
Autumn’s place was unbelievable for the price. Surrounded by lush greens and the sounds of frogs and birds through the night, it was truly a peaceful experience. Autumn was quick with responses for any questions we had during our stay and was accommodating with any needs. We fell in love with Pahoa and loved returning to this studio after a day out. Couldn’t recommend this more.

Volcano Escape! Epic Tiny Home on Lava Field

RyanRating, 5 stars5 days ago
This is our second time staying at Ohana House, and we absolutely love it! The quiet, secluded location feels like our little slice of paradise. On our way there, we usually stop by the local grocery store to pick up some snacks, and we’ve always found the kitchen to be nicely stocked with essentials. The place was spotless when we arrived, which is always a nice touch! One of our favorite things to do is relax on the lanai while taking in the view of the vast lava field. It’s such a peaceful setting that really allows us to reflect and appreciate our time there. I even picked up a copy of Jade’s book to read while lounging on the lanai, and I can’t recommend it enough—absolutely loved it! We’d definitely stay here again! Being away from the hustle and bustle is such a big plus for us. We truly cherished this experience!

RobinRating, 5 stars3 weeks ago
This is a beautiful location with a very calm and serene pond and Koi fish! It has a wonderful porch with lots of chairs, and the bathrooms are fantastic. You are right next to the ocean and can walk right over to experience the waves and the surf. And there is a gate at the end of the driveway that helps you feel secure. It’s a very nice home and I’m glad we chose it!

Hilo Ohana Stay

CristinaRating, 5 stars4 months ago
Lovely and spacious for my 3 month stay for work. All the amenities that I needed for cooking and cleaning, communal laundry in bldg, good wifi coverage. Safe and walkable to downtown which I loved. Small amount of noise with neighbours and ants/insects which are expected to some degree being in an apt bldg, in the tropics. I would definitely stay there again:)

Your guide to Hilo

Welcome to Hilo

The town of Hilo meets the definition of an idyllic Hawaiian destination. Its black sand beaches are lined with swaying palm trees arching over aquamarine waters, dramatic waterfalls plunge from shelves blotted by tropical rainforests, and some of the planet’s most active volcanoes are only a short drive away. Yet Hilo sees a fraction of the crowds drawn to its sunnier sister town of Kona. Hilo’s lush beauty and relaxed vibe can be attributed to its status as the rainiest city in the United States. Many visitors drop into Hilo for a quick visit before jumping off to explore the nearby Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. But hikers, snorkelers, waterfall chasers, and science enthusiasts will find a wide range of activities to choose from in Hilo, accompanied by a collegiate town spirit, thanks to the nearby University of Hawaii at Hilo.

The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Hilo

The lush eastern side of the island of Hawaii is temperate but characteristically wet, soaking in an annual average of 140 inches of rainfall. This wet climate means it’s advisable to layer or bring a light jacket in preparation for intermittent showers; if you plan to venture up to the higher elevations inland, especially near summits and volcanoes, come prepared for legitimately cold temperatures. Spring and fall generally offer visitors the best overlap of warm and dry days in Hilo, the latter months thinning out crowds as the tourist season comes to a close. Hurricane season spans June through November; while violent tropical storms are always a possibility, historically they’ve rarely made landfall across the Big Island.

Top things to do in Hilo

Punalu‘u Beach

Punalu‘u Beach is the most famous and accessible black sand beach on the island. Hawksbill and Hawaiian green turtles are known to amble up the volcanic-rock-tinted shoreline to sunbathe here. Just be sure to give these aquatic natives a wide berth onshore and in the water, as they’re protected under the Endangered Species Act.

Hamakua Coast Scenic Drive

While Rainbow Falls State Park unequivocally warrants a visit to take in its grand cascade of water, a more adventurous option awaits along this scenic serpentine 40-mile route tracing the North Shore of the island toward Waipi’o Valley. The road is dotted by a multitude of waterfalls and old sugar cane fields along the way.

Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve and Garden

While flora grows in abundance across Hilo, this botanical garden and nature preserve hosts a riot of tropical plants of unmatched color and beauty. There are more than 2,000 species collected and cultivated from across the globe, easily accessible to visitors by winding wooden pathways.
