Eat/Drink like A LOCAL - Taverns & Ramen

Ramen making with a chef
I grew up eating this style of ramen broth since I was a kid. I grew up in a country side so ramen was a comforting food that was always made at home. Ramen is such a unique Japanese food though because it is the most creative Japanese food. Every ramen shop has its own creative ramen broth and toppings. In my ramen cooking class, the most important priority is my guests can recreate this dish at their kitchen. So ingredients is quite accessible and the cooking process contains many small steps, but I want to make it as simple focused on things that are important for the best taste. I am excited to share with you my home-style Shoyu ramen soup recipe that I have created based on the recipe I grew up eating! We’ll also make gyoza with lots of cabbage and chives, then pan-fry it bottom side up! Very classic Japanese gyoza ingredients and method of cooking. I will ask everyone to use their hands to chop, form gyoza, and present the dishes we make. There are lots of tips to learn more about Japanese culinary culture. I look forward to having you all! *Ramen noodle-making is not included in this class, BUT I’ll share you a surprising tip to make ramen noodles using Capellini!
Explore quaint areas outside the city
We'll visit areas west of Tokyo by hopping on the very compact local train. You'll be able to see the real lives of the residents in addition to some popular tourist sites, such as the birthplace of the iconic lucky cat, maneki-neko, a peaceful shrine, and charming local shopping streets whose air is blended with old and new. You can also enjoy delicious local foods and sweets. Even though I'm a professional Japanese guide, I still always get excited when I visit this area. These areas are exactly the place where you need a tour guide to make the most of the affluent pleasures in these jewel box communities. I'll serve you a few street foods. The last destination is Sangenjaya. We will go up to a lookout deck commanding nice view. This tour is much fun, profitable and tasty tour! (during the tour, served foods are not enough as lunch)

Ride to foodie spots on a retro tram
What is Hokkori? Hokkori means feeling cozy, relaxed, and warmed in the cockles of your heart. For this experience, I will take you to see the old and nostalgic side of Tokyo, with hidden gems, cafes, canteens, and eateries that only the locals know about. We'll take the Tokyu Setagaya Line, a cute little tramway that runs through this unexplored neighborhood in Tokyo. The Setagaya Line opened in 1925 and it only has two cars, but it still has that relaxed air and retro feel—and all the areas along the tram line evoke that same feeling. I'll take you to all the secret spots that I've been visiting since I was a kid. We'll stop by my favorite shop and temple, and we'll also have a bite of some local snacks. You will feel the friendly atmosphere of good old Tokyo. At the end of my experience, you'll feel and understand the true meaning of Hokkori:) This tour is not just about food, but also about the culture of Tokyo and how the locals live. Izakaya Cooking
Join my Japanese pub dishes cooking class! Izakaya means stay-drink-house. It is a Japanese tapas, or pub-style food, that is usually eaten in restaurants. But during the pandemic, when all of us were not able to go out, people started cooking this food! I suppose it might be happening in other places, such as making sourdough bread. I started cooking these Japanese tapas dishes in my kitchen during that time also, and I enjoyed cooking them because the ingredients, prep, and cooking time were short. This class-class menu is perfect for Japan travelers because we will be making small Japanese dishes that you might be eating during your trip. These foods can be from Seven Eleven, bento boxes on a bullet train, or a restaurant in Osaka. And you can learn how to cook them! My cooking class is hands-on after a short demo. You will experience some new ingredients, new cooking techniques, and also only Japanese cooking tools! After we make our dishes, we will enjoy our creation by sharing a lovely meal together! Checkout my everyday cooking classes and life in Tokyo, please check out my IG at tokyocookingstudio!
Painting w/ Urushi lacquer&metal powder
"Maki-e" is a Japanese traditional art using urushi lacquer and metal powder. In this experimental class, you will decorate lacquerware using hira-maki-e—a simple technique that can be finished in one day. Even an absolute beginner, who knows nothing at all about makie, can enjoy it. During this class, you can experience real maki-e, using genuine Japanese lacquer and metal powder. You can choose a vessel and a design from various stencils. I'll prepare the tools and materials, so you do not need to bring anything to the class. After tracing the design onto the vessel, you'll draw the design with a brush for maki-e and urushi lacquer, and sprinkle metal powder on top. At the end, I'll pack your work in a box for you to take home. After leaving it overnight, simply wipe off the extra powder to use your vessel. Other things to note If you have a particular design in mind, please prepare it in advance.
Shop for vintage kimonos with a stylist
Let's find a beautiful, reasonably-priced kimono. Usually it costs more than $2,800 for a kimono. However secondhand ones are priced from $75, and they can be beautiful and really unique. I'll show you my favorite secondhand shop where is in near SHINJUKU, and the treasure hunt will begin for kimono, belt, jacket, shoes, and bags. I'll ask you specific questions to understand your style in order to advise and help you find unique and edgy pieces. I recommend you choose a vintage kimono if you are under 5' 2" tall and 121 pounds. Vintage ones were worn by people in the past, who were smaller, which is why the kimonos are very small but cute and beautiful. If it's not your size, you can use it decoratively, as a tapestry. However, there are also modern kimonos. I recommend that you choose a modern style if you are tall. If you'd like to take a lunch after this event, I can guide you to restaurant which is Okinawan food. This restaurant is reasonable and casual. You can take unique and traditional island food.
