A Luxury Cabin right on the Golden Circle

JaniceRating, 5 stars1 week ago
We had an amazing stay at this cozy cabin. Host was very responsive and easy to get into the cabin. It is remote but not too far away from town, which was lovely to get a very quiet and private experience, and quite comfortable. Nice to have space to cook some meals in combination with eating out. We were able to see the northern lights since only other small cabin lights around, and no major light pollution. Very convenient to get to many attractions on the south island. Highly recommend!

Barn house by the sea

JoshuaRating, 5 stars1 month ago
The barn house was beautifully built and decorated with spectacular views. The skylight windows were perfect for watching for the northern lights. The kitchen had all the basics and some extras like a nespresso machine and pods. We enjoyed cooking there and using the hot tub. The washer and dryer were super helpful. It was a great launching place for the Golden Circle. Stokkseyri is a cute little town with a great local pool. The turf house across the street was fun to explore as was the beach on the other side of the turf wall. It is very near Bakkahestar for highly recommended Icelandic horse rides with a local couple on the beach in Eyrarbakki. Nearby Selfoss has anything you need including an amazing fish market Fiskbud Suderlands for great prices on fresh caught local fish. Kristinn was very responsive and we loved our stay!

New spacious 4 bedroom house

This was the perfect stay for our 2 families of 3. Beautiful home in a peaceful location. I cannot emphasize enough how fantastic Gunnsa and Oli were. They were so responsive and helpful with our stay, recommending a taxi driver and making inquiries for us related to activities we wanted to do. The check in and check out was SO flexible and easy- the hosts were just amazing our whole week, going above and beyond. I would highly recommend staying at this beautiful home in Iceland.

We are so happy we got to stay with Jon and Martina! They had a crib for our toddler and he got to run around looking at chickens and lambs. Excellent location - close to Vik and puffin viewing points. And breakfast was excellent!

Comfortable 5-bedroom villa by the Golden Circle

KerryRating, 5 stars1 month ago
What a wonderful place and in the perfect location for exploring the Golden Circle. The house was plenty big for the eight adults in our group, and we were all able to spread out, but also come together for meals and games. Although we didn’t use it, the hot tub was a great amenity. Our host was wonderful and very responsive when I contacted her with a question before booking and also when I needed to turn off the security system. We would highly recommend staying here.

We had an amazing time at Geir’s family home! This was an incredible place to spend the new year and we would absolutely return! The location is perfect. We were able to walk outside the city lights a short distance to get an amazing view of the northern lights. A designated lookout is also a short car ride away. Plus, downtown Reykjavík is a short car or bus ride away! It could also be a good walk for those who like to hike.

REY Stays - House

DerekRating, 5 stars2 weeks ago
Great quiet place to stay. Very clean and up to date. The only issue we had was we came in late and it was dark and it was difficult to see the unit number on the house. We would suggest better lighting to help with the navigation. Other than that we enjoyed our night and would recommend.

Nice & Open 3 floors Great Views

YuliyaRating, 5 stars2 days ago
Oh where to begin! The house: it’s a child’s or child at heart dream “tree house”. Very unique and well constructed by Tolli himself. We had everything we needed. Shower has great pressure and supper hot water (which is a must). Beds are comfy, blankets are warm and plenty of pillows. Our kids loved sleeping on the nets. Tolli graciously provided mattresses for them. The host: very friendly, extremely accommodating and responsive. Plus and very interesting person. As we got to the house, he was just finishing up making a round wood table for the kitchen….fascinating. Almost everything inside is constructed by Tolli himself. Location: restaurants, market and gas station within 2 min. We loved the location itself bc it in the middle of all the places we planned on visiting. The roads are not congested. The scenery around the house is peaceful. There are cats and chickens walking about the yard. If we ever return to Iceland, we will definitely stay here again. Thank you Tolli!

Your guide to Iceland

Welcome to Iceland

An island born from violent volcanic activity more than 16 million years ago, Iceland’s rugged natural beauty has become globally synonymous with adventurous travelers in search of an off-the-beaten-path holiday. And indeed Iceland’s landscape rewards the curious and intrepid, with all roads and trails seemingly leading toward yet another spectacular Arctic lagoon, geyser, black sand beach, jagged lava field, steaming hot spring, verdant valley, or spiraling mountain top to explore (often without another soul in sight). In winter the dazzling Northern Lights flicker and shimmer overhead, and in summer days stretch without end. With so much natural beauty around, it’s sometimes easy to overlook the capital city of Reykjavík. Host to one of Europe’s most vibrant art and design hubs, Reykjavík’s dining and nightlife scenes play prominently in the lives of locals and visitors alike. And of course, when you’ve hiked too far or danced too much, geothermal-heated milky-blue pools await to soothe sore muscles back to health.

The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Iceland

Iceland’s primary seasons of summer and winter offer diametrically different but equally stunning experiences strongly influenced by its proximity to the Arctic Circle. In summer, daylight lingers for up to 24 hours, a Northern Hemisphere phenomenon known as the midnight sun, offering visitors the unusual opportunity to experience neverending daylight around the clock (peaking in June), with numerous agencies offering guided hikes and whale-watching tours illuminated by the nighttime sun. The summer months are also optimal for staying in one of the area’s homes and spending the days investigating the island’s diverse and unique ecosystems — vivid woodlands, pristine ice-blue lakes, craggy peaks, moss-covered coastline, and majestic waterfalls. In winter the days become shorter and the temperatures dip considerably, requiring layered attire. Yet many will tell you Iceland in winter is the best time to visit, with fewer travelers around, inviting an unforgettable sense of solitary silence, the world muffled to a memory by the pristine white snow that covers the landscape. It’s also the season to catch the spectacular Northern Lights.

Top things to do in Iceland

Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon

Also known as Feather River Canyon, a coat of emerald moss covers almost every inch of this remarkable scar across the South Coast destination during summer months. Created by thousands of years of streaming deep-blue glacial water cutting through dark bedrock, the resulting ravishing ravine is popular with hikers and photographers. If you experience a certain sense of familiarity here, it may be because you’ve seen it as the backdrop in a very famous cable network show set within an imaginary realm of fire and ice.

Rauðasandur Beach

With 10 kilometers of golden red-tinged sands to explore during low tide, Rauðasandur Beach is a beachcombing paradise of epic proportions. Known for its red sand and tranquil remoteness, this is a place where migrating whales can be spotted offshore alongside the occasional whale bones onshore. Be prepared to drive carefully along a steep and narrow gravel road to the beach, one requiring constant attention and slow speeds.

Hornstrandir Nature Reserve

If peace and quiet rank high on your list and you identify as a capable backcountry backpacker, this nature reserve offers the opportunity to experience a section of Iceland left mostly untouched by human habitation for the last 70 years. Home to the country’s largest colony of Arctic foxes, alongside a unique abundance of endemic flora and fauna, Hornstrandir Nature Reserve’s ecosystem is popular with birders and nature photographers. Camping gear and proper attire are required before entering, as there are no shops available in Hornstrandir.
